Ties to the Community

Building Community

The Iowa City Municipal Airport hosts events throughout the year to bring aviation and non-aviation communities together. Young Eagle Flights, Pancake Breakfasts, and Open Houses are just some of the ways.

Economic Impact

The Iowa City Municipal Airport is the third most active general aviation airport in Iowa with 84 aircraft based here. The Airport conducts around 36,000 annual flight operations and generates an estimated economic impact of $11.2 million in the local economy.

Aviation Education

In addition to providing civilian pilot training, the airport is integrated into the aviation education pursuits at the University of Iowa, including the onsite Operator Performance Lab. Here, faculty and students actively conduct flight tests while researching breakthroughs in aviation performance and safety.

Healthcare

Whether it’s via AirCare helicopter or jet airplane, our proximity to the VA, Mercy Hospital, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Eastern Iowa’s lone Level 1 Trauma center means our airport plays a vital role in healthcare and the transportation of critical care patients. Members of our Air Medical Services team works in close coordination with first responders, emergency medicine staff and organ transplant surgeons.

Recreational Aviation

Since 1998, Jet Air, Inc. has provided Fixed Base Operations (FBO) for private and recreational aviation including refueling, aircraft maintenance, and other ground services. The company also operates a rapidly expanding flight school, jet charter service, and a fleet of rental aircraft. The airport is currently home to 59 T-hangars, one FBO Maintenance hangar, six corporate hangars, and three bulk storage hangars.

Public Safety

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a volunteer organization with an aviation-minded membership. It performs three congressionally assigned missions in support of public safety: Emergency Services, Aerospace Education for youth and the general public, and Cadet Programs for teenagers.
